Creating Film Clips

Creating Clips from Discs

Creating clips from a disc will require having a disc drive in your computer, or connecting a disc drive that is able to read the type of disc (DVD or Blu-ray) you’re using.

Wondershare UniConverter works well for creating clips from DVDs that can then be exported to your hard drive in various formats. Wondershare does need to be purchased.

MakeMKV allows Blu-ray discs to be saved in a format that can be clipped. To create a file type that works with Wondershare, open the Blu-ray disc in MakeMKV and save the file as an mp4. It will also require purchasing after the trial period.

Creating Film Stills

Film still can be created using the free software, VLC Media Player. To view the video using VLC, drag the DVD icon from your desktop to VLC where it says “Drag Media Here.” Then play the movie, find the correct time, pause, and go to Video > Snapshot. This saves a 72 dpi .png file suitable for use in presentations (on a Mac, by default it saves to the Pictures folder).

If the film still will be used in a publication, you’ll need to re-save as a TIFF and change the resolution to 300dpi in Photoshop.
