How to Use LUNA Images In Digital Platforms Without Downloading

The VRC encourages the fair use of images in our LUNA digital collections into platforms and digital projects for students and scholars. (Please read the College Art Association's excellent guide, Best Practices in Fair Use for the Visual Arts, for more information.)

When working on digital projects, you might want to point to an image online in LUNA for use in an external platform—such as ArcGIS StoryMaps—without having to download the image.

To get an image URL that “points” at a LUNA image and allows you to incorporate it into other digital platforms without needing to download the image out of LUNA and upload it into the external platform, we recommend this work-around:

  1. Right-click on a LUNA thumbnail
  2. Copy the image address
  3. Manually adjust the size of the image by editing the URL if a larger image is needed (Refer to the Size chart below.)

Then, add that link to your external platform. If the platform is set up to point to or pull in the online image, it should appear in your platform.

If you have any questions about LUNA, please write to visualresources@uchicago.edu and VRC staff members Bridget Madden and Allie Scholten will be happy to help.
