Preparator [BA, MFA, MAPH]

Serve as in-house preparator and fabrication specialist doing matting & framing, producing matboard mounts, and making wall labels. May also collaborate with any other position to provide support during crunch times.

Registrar [MAPH only]

Serve as registrar for both CWAC Exhibitions and JSMC. Prepare loan paperwork and complete condition reports for artworks loaned to CWAC Exhibitions. Process new acquisitions, conduct object-based research, and serve as primary cataloger for the JSMC. Write condition reports and manage collections care for JSMC objects, including preservation housing. Manage JSMC loans for instructors and individual research appointments. Catalogs images for LUNA archives. Conduct JSMC outreach and collaborate with the Communications and Events Manager to host at least one event/program related to JSMC.

Communications and Events Manager [MAPH only]

Help curators develop and plan engaging events and programming for CWAC Exhibitions, create run-of-show documents, send speaker invitations, etc. Collaborate with VRC staff to plan catering menus and budget. Help VRC staff and faculty advisors develop and plan professional development programming related to the Curatorial Studies Specialization and CWAC Exhibitions. Provides day-of event support for all CWAC Exh & Curatorial Studies programming. Collaborates closely with Communications Manager and Graphic Designer to promote events. Offer copy/line editing for introductory texts and wall labels; draft copy for website, email announcements, press kits, and social media posts. Manage website(s), post content to various portals, send emails, etc. Conduct outreach to press outlets and develop relationships with local critics.

Photographer [BA, MFA, MAPH]

Photograph and/or digitize all artworks before the exhibition to use in press kit, maps/checklist, and other design collateral. Take installation and event photography for the archive on LUNA and website. Take headshots of curators, artists, and team members for their profiles. Collaborate with Registrar on cataloging images for LUNA.

Graphic Designer [BA, MFA, MAPH]

Create original designs in response to curator specifications for all exhibition collateral, including vinyl graphics (title and introductory text), wall labels, posters, maps, and other exhibition takeaways. Prepare design templates for social media posts in collaboration with the Communications and Events Manager.

Digitization Specialist [BA only]

Create high-quality images for inclusion in LUNA (the main database for art images used for teaching & research at UChicago) on a variety of digitization equipment and software in the VRC Lab

Art Cataloging Translator—Japanese Art [BA, MA, PhD]

Translate published material and input art cataloging information (artist, title, date, style period, materials, repository, subject headings, and more) for images of Japanese art for inclusion in the VRC’s LUNA database. In addition to translation work, the Cataloging Translator will catalog a collection of Nihonga paintings and a collection of Koziumi Kishio woodblock prints.
