How We See is a course-based exhibition that encourages students to draw from their own lives, seeking out things that spark their interest, observing and reflecting on them, and completing a project through images and text.
“In your own way (but not by purchasing), obtain two clocks with second hands. Ideally, they should be identical. If that’s not possible, try to find ones that look alike. If you are unable to get them or only obtained one, handwrite a detailed account of the attempts you made and where they fell short. (We will curate the clocks in class on Thursday)”---the Assignment from 10/31.
When designing this course, I was interested in exploring how much of it could permeate into students’ real lives. When faced with this somewhat peculiar assignment, some students might feel comfortable, while others may feel uncertain about how to ask for help or unsure of what resources are available to them. Can one simply take the clock from a classroom? Some students might say yes—and they would also make sure to return it after the assignment. One student found two vintage-looking clocks listed for free on Craigslist. Another borrowed one from a friend. Each student’s unique perspective leads to different approaches and outcomes. What’s important is that, as a class, we can listen to each other's sharing, collaboratively engage in the subsequent exercises, and use the materials already gathered—whether physical clocks or substitutions in writing—to work together on curating the final piece. - Tianjiao Wang
