"Untitled" L.A.

May 1, 2023 - August 10, 2023
Cochrane-Woods Art Center

This manifestation of Felix Gonzalez-Torres’ “Untitled” (L.A.) was installed twice in the hallways of CWAC by students and instructors of the Department of Art History’s Spring 2023 Earthworks Seminar (taught by Christine Mehring) and the Spring 2023 Suzanne Deal Booth Conservation Seminar (taught by Christian Scheidemann). The work was originally installed in the Smart Museum of Art exhibition Monochrome Multitudes (September 22, 2022–January 8, 2023) curated by Christine Mehring and Orianna Cacchione and is made up of pieces of green candy, intended to deplete over time as viewers engage with the work and take candies away. Other iterations of the work were installed in the Media Arts, Data, and Design Center (MADD) on the first floor of Crerar Library, overseen by Laura Steward, Curator of Public Art at the Smart Museum of Art, who additionally oversaw the installation at other locations on campus, including the Campus North Residence Hall, Saieh Hall for Economics, and UChicago Student Wellness, the last which was spearheaded by a student curator in the Conservation Seminar. More information, including the label text written by Darby English, Carl Darling Buck Professor, Department of Art History, and installed with all iterations of the work, can be found here.
